Amethyst - Tumbled Stone

Amethyst takes its name from the Greek "amethystos" which means "not to be drunk", probably in reference to the legend of Dionysus. The Greeks used amethyst cups to drink their wine and attributed it virtues to combat drunkenness. Amethyst is a symbol of sobriety, probably because its color resembles that of wine cut with water.

Of magmatic origin, amethysts are born from the crystallization of silica, they line centimeter-sized geodes or sometimes several meters wide in basaltic rocks; or, they fill hydrothermal veins in plutonic rocks such as granite. If they are found in Europe, Russia and India, the main deposits of amethyst are located in Brazil, in the states of Bahia and Rio Grande do Sul, in Uruguay, Zambia and Madagascar.
