Named in 1840 by Mathias Eduard Schweizer in the Valle di Antigorio, Italy. Antigorite is one of the varieties of the serpentine mineral group. Antigorite is formed during low-grade metamorphism of olivine-rich rocks (peridotite and other ultrabasic rocks, gabbros, porphyries, etc.); is a major component of serpentinites. Antigorite may be accompanied by lizardite.
