Not very stable at low temperatures, this stone only forms within living organisms. It is thus frequently bio-synthesized by different species. It constitutes in fact: the mother-of-pearl and pearls of oysters, the shell of many shellfish, including mussels and part of the skeletons of hard corals, located on coral reefs.
So, half of all seashells have a shell made of aragonite, while the other half is made of calcite. However, some seashells, such as abalone, have both forms of calcium carbonate.
