Fossil Wood - Pebble

Fossilized wood is composed of fossilized wood where all traces of organic matter have been replaced by minerals (most often silicates, such as quartz), while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrification process occurs when the wood is buried under a layer of sediment, where it is first preserved due to a lack of oxygen, before mineral-rich water circulates through the sediment and gradually replaces the wood cells with minerals. It probably takes less than a hundred years for some pieces of wood to become petrified.

Fossil Wood is found all over the world, and sometimes in exceptional forms, by species or size. For example, in Argentina, there is a park in Patagonia that has petrified trees over 3 meters in diameter and 30 meters long. In Australia, there are fossil and opalized Woods. In the United States, there is the Gilboa forest which is the oldest known fossil Wood forest (over 380 million years). Other locations are also famous, in Hoggar, Madagascar, Brazil, etc.
