This mineral was first identified in 1896 from a sample from Tyrol, Austria, by German mineralogist and petrologist Ernst Weinschenk. The name of this gemstone, clinozoisite, derives from its dimorph, zoisite, to which was added a Greek prefix meaning "inclined plane".
