Description
Fossil coral is a fascinating natural stone, resulting from the gradual transformation of ancient corals into agate. This material is often referred to as agate coral or agate fossil coral. Fossilized coral is recognized by the delicate floral patterns that adorn the stone. Agate fossil corals come in a range of natural colors, from white and pink to brown, gray, black, yellow, and red. The diversity of hues within a single stone is influenced by the weathering and oxidation of the original mineral. Corals, among the most colorful of marine creatures, thrive in the warm, shallow waters of the tropics, feeding on plankton. The oldest fossil corals date back to the Ordovician period, over 450 million years ago. These marine animals have a sac-like body, a mouth, tentacles, and a skeleton, the latter of which is what survives in the fossil. Corals can live singly or in dense colonies. Sometimes they are buried under sediments due to tectonic movements or changes in sea level. The pressure and temperature during burial contributed to the formation of these rock deposits, thus integrating these elements into our current geological understanding.
