The term "Carnelian" originates from the Latin word "corneus", meaning "horn". This name refers to the dogwood (Cornus mas), whose wood is known for its hardness comparable to that of horn. The bright red hue of its leaves and wood echoes that of Carnelian, in particular that of the fruit of the male dogwood, which is distinguished from the toxic fruit of the female dogwood, which is black in color.

The most prized Carnelians come from the Pune region of India.
