In ancient Egypt, the emerald symbolized immortality, a gift from Thoth, the god of wisdom, and was particularly prized by Queen Cleopatra. The emerald mines of Upper Egypt, rediscovered a century ago, are among the oldest in the world and are named Cleopatra's mines because of her attachment to the gemstone.
