Epidote was first identified by René Just Haüt in 1801. Its name comes from the Greek word "episodis", meaning to increase or add. The stone was discovered in 1874 in the southern United States, specifically in the Unaka Mountains, from which it also takes its name. Epidote is sometimes referred to as pistacite, due to its pistachio green hue. Although green is its predominant color, it can range from opaque to transparent, and can even have shades of pink.
