The brown or tan hue of fluorites often results from the incorporation of particular impurities, such as iron or even manganese, which modify the way light is absorbed. Smoky fluorite is found mainly in large deposits located in China, the United States (notably in Colorado and Illinois), Russia, as well as in France (in the Pyrenees, the Massif Central and the Var) and in several African countries.
