Heliotrope gets its name from the Greek words "helios" and "trepeini", which mean "sun" and "to turn", respectively. It is also known as "blood jasper" or "bloodstone". This stone is a fascinating mixture of crystallized chalcedony, quartz and iron. Pliny the Elder was the first to give it these names, having observed that when Heliotrope was oriented towards the sun and immersed in water, it revealed spots and patches resembling blood.
