Hematite, whose Latin name "haematites" means "blood", is also known by several names such as hematitogelite, oligiste, micaceous iron or anhydroferrite. In prehistoric times, this stone was mainly used in the form of red powder by Upper Paleolithic men, then by Homo sapiens, who used it as a pigment for their cave paintings.

Hematite stone is present in many deposits around the world, but the most notable are in Brazil, France and Italy. In 2004, scientists discovered hematite in raw form on the planet Mars, within spheres, which revived the hypothesis of the existence of water, an essential element in the formation of this fascinating mineral.
