Lepidolite was identified in 1861 by scientists Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff. Originally referred to as "lilalite" because of its lavender-lilac hue, it was later given the name "lepidolite", derived from the Greek "lepidos", meaning "scale", because of its scaly appearance, characterized by lithium flakes.
