Nuumite - Tumbled Stone

Nuummite is an exceptional gemstone, resulting from a unique mixture of two minerals from the ortho-amphibole group: Anthophyllite and Gedrite. Its name comes from Nuuk, a city located in southwest Greenland, where this rare stone was discovered in 1982.
Geologically, Nuummite is of volcanic origin and dates back approximately 2.8 billion years. Later transformations, due to metamorphism, have produced the striking mixture of crystals that gives Nuummite its distinctive appearance. Although similar rocks are present in a few minor deposits in the United States, it is in Greenland that the coloration is sufficiently developed for this stone to be recognized by this name.

The beautiful iridescent reflections on a deep black background are the result of metamorphism, resulting from the interaction of light with the layers of Gedrite and Anthophyllite. These iridescent flashes are particularly prized in jewelry and by collectors, making Nuummite a stone of unparalleled beauty.

Nuumite deposits are extremely rare. They include the Yukon River in Canada, Converse County in the United States, Greenland, and Kainuu in Finland.
