Apache Tear Obsidian - Tumbled Stone

Apache Tears Obsidian is a unique form of Black Obsidian, occurring as small, notched stones measuring approximately 2 to 5 centimeters. This fascinating mineral was formed when silica-rich lava mixed with the mineral perlite, a volcanic substance that is formed when water is absorbed during the cooling of lava. When the perlite is fully or partially hydrated, small obsidian concretions emerge, known as Apache Tears. This phenomenon has occurred several times in the United States, particularly in Arizona, which is recognized as the type locality for this mineral, discovered between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Subsequently, Apache Tears Obsidian was also identified in western Nevada and southwestern Utah, with finds dated to the mid-20th century.
