Palo Santo, known by the scientific name Bursera graveolens, is a tropical tree belonging to the Bursareaceae family, native to Central and South America. It is found in the wild mainly in Peru and Ecuador. The first mention of this tree dates back to 1824, thanks to the expedition led by the German naturalist Karl Wilhelm von Humboldt. The term "Palo Santo" literally means "sacred wood" and this tree can reach up to 18 meters in height. It is distinguished by its small leaves and its deep green fruits. From its wood, an essential oil is extracted as well as an incense with a citrus scent. Traditionally, the wood is cut with a machete and cut into sticks of about ten centimeters, which are then burned. In Peru, Palo Santo has official protection, which means that only the harvesting of dead wood is allowed. After cutting, the wood must be preserved for at least four years to intensify its aroma when burned. Its trade is strictly regulated, so it is essential to exercise vigilance when purchasing. Many vendors source their Palo Santo incense sticks from trees felled in sustainably managed forests.

Composition and Maintenance

Composition: Bursera graveolens

Effects and Usage

Step 1: To begin, it is essential to master the art of lighting your stick without damaging it. Hold it at a 45-degree angle and bring it close to the flame of a lighter or candle. When the stick begins to catch fire, gently extinguish it. This is when the Palo Santo wood begins to produce smoke and release its essential oils into the air. An effective technique is to gently blow on the Palo Santo to extinguish the flame while allowing the smoke to spread. Avoid charring it, as it needs to burn slowly, through embers rather than a live flame. Once extinguished, you can relight it several times until it is completely consumed.

Step 2: The process of purifying negative energies with Palo Santo is simple and effective: light the stick and let the smoke diffuse throughout the room, paying particular attention to entrances and exits such as doors and windows. Use circular clockwise motions to maximize the effect. If desired, focus on specific objects, such as crystals, directing the smoke towards them, where you feel purification is needed.

Step 3: Next, place the stick in a fireproof container and let it burn quietly. Be sure to open at least one window to release the negative energy and, of course, the smoke. This simple ritual is designed to mitigate the influence of elements that drain positive energies from your home, thus promoting happiness and harmony in your living space.

Step 4: If you want to extinguish your stick while it is burning, simply smother it with sand, crush it in its ashes, or dip the end directly into water.

Step 5: Remember to air all the rooms in your home for at least 10 minutes.
