Description
Description
Pinolite is an exceptionally rare stone, consisting of magnesite, dolomite and graphite. Its formation results from the deposition of magnesite nodules in layers of graphite and dolomite, which are then sealed and frozen over time. This mineral has a unique chemical composition and was first discovered in 1873 in Austria. Until 2018, Austria was the only region known to host Pinolite, but this situation has changed.
During World War II, Pinolite was mined extensively by Germany and the Axis powers because of its rich manganese content. This metal was crucial for the manufacture of iron and steel, which were needed for the production of armaments, armoured vehicles, trains, aircraft, ships and submarines. After the war and the German surrender, mining continued until 1991, when the land was sold. It is estimated that between 1904 and 1991, approximately 5.5 million tonnes of Pinolite were mined from the Lower Tauern Mountains in Austria. Most of this material was smelted, making the present-day Pinolite samples all the more valuable.
