Purpurite - Raw Stone

Discovered in 1905, Purpurite was named for its unique hue, reminiscent of the word "purple", and was first identified by Louis Caryl Graton and Theodore Schaller. Purpurite, a rare stone, was discovered a century ago. Although there is no legend surrounding it, its beauty does not go unnoticed. Opaque, it has shades ranging from pink to red, including violet and reddish. Its satiny surface can sometimes display iridescent reflections or a phenomenon of pleochroism. Under the effect of weathering, it can transform into a brown or even black hue, due to the oxidation of manganese, which is also responsible for its distinctive color.

The most important deposits of Purpurite are found in Namibia. However, this stone is also present in other regions of the world, such as in the United States, notably in Custer in South Dakota, as well as in Australia, France, Portugal, South Africa and Madagascar.
