Rhyolite is a highly siliceous volcanic rock, formed during intense and explosive eruptions. When magma forms beneath the Earth's crust during an eruption, granite begins to grow. Sometimes these new underground crystalline structures are ejected to the surface, giving rise to what we call Rhyolite. Fortunately, this was a common occurrence in the ancient world, as this volcanic activity would devastate entire landmasses and destroy all life. Since the beginning of the 20th century, only three small Rhyolite eruptions have been documented, occurring in Alaska (USA, 1912), Papua New Guinea (1953-1957), and Chile (2008).

Rhyolite is a felsic mineral, rich in silica, composed of tiny crystals. These crystals include quartz, biotite, plagioclase (a feldspar mineral), hornblende, and sanidine. The composition of Rhyolite can vary from stone to stone, influencing its color and texture. The mineral is most commonly seen in beige or gray tones, but it can also appear in shades of dark green. Over the centuries, this stone has been given many names, but it was officially named "Rhyolite" in 1860 by Ferdinand von Richthofen.

Rhyolite lava eruptions are rare today, except in certain areas such as Iceland. Deposits can also be found in the Harz, Saxony, Vosges and Esterel.
