Ruby is an exceptionally hard aluminum oxide, known as corundum, and is characterized by a hexagonal crystal system. It represents the red variety of corundum, ranking among the most valuable alongside sapphire. Ruby's hues range from bright red to reddish pink to blood orange red, and it can sometimes appear in shades of blue and green. The bright red color, which attracts so much covetousness, is due to the presence of chromium, while some inclusions of titanium oxide can create a six-pointed star effect on the surface of the ruby. Its name comes from the Latin word for "red".
