Description
Description
Ruby is an exceptionally hard aluminum oxide, known as corundum, and is characterized by a hexagonal crystal system. It represents the red variety of corundum, ranking among the most valuable alongside sapphire. Ruby's hues range from bright red to reddish pink to blood orange red, and it can sometimes appear in shades of blue and green. The bright red color, which attracts so much covetousness, is due to the presence of chromium, while some inclusions of titanium oxide can create a six-pointed star effect on the surface of the ruby. Its name comes from the Latin word for "red".
This fascinating crystal was known long before the biblical era, but it wasn't until the early 1800s that it was realized that many rubies were actually red spinels or garnets. Throughout the ages, many legends have emerged surrounding the use of rubies, testifying to their importance in human history.
