Sardonyx - Tumbled Stone

Sardonyx is a variety of Onyx that is distinguished by its bands of Carnelian. Discovered in 1837 by J.D. Dana, it takes its name from the ancient Greek city of Sardis, the capital of Lydia. The term "sard" was historically used to refer to very dark Carnelian, and is still used today. Although this mineral is not particularly rare, it is not common to come across it.

In ancient times, Roman soldiers often wore rings or necklaces made of Sardonyx, decorated with the image of Mars, the god of war. These jewels were believed to give protection and courage to the fighters. In addition, Sardonyx was a popular material for carving, used in the creation of sculptures, dishes and various decorative objects.

Sri Lanka currently hosts the most significant deposit of Sardonyx, but other notable regions such as India, Uruguay and Brazil also contribute to the wealth of this precious stone.
