Scolecite - Tumbled Stone

Scolecite is a silicate mineral composed of aluminum and hydrated calcium, belonging to the zeolite family. This stone grows in the cavities of basalt, granite and syenites. First discovered in 1813 by A. F. Gehlan and J. N. Fuchs in Germany, its name comes from the Greek word for "worm", because of the way the stones twist when exposed to a flame. Scolecite occurs as fine prismatic crystals and can also exist in large masses. Its color palette is varied, ranging from white to pink, purple, yellow, red and even colorless.

Although very rare crystalline forms occur in Iceland and some parts of India, Scolecite can be found en masse in many parts of the world, including the United States, Europe, and Africa.
