Septaria - Point

Septaria, often referred to as “dragonstone,” is a fascinating concretion of varying hues, combining aragonite (brown), calcite (yellow), and limestone (gray). The term refers to any concretion with internal cavities or cracks. This unique mineral formed approximately 50 to 70 million years ago during the Cretaceous Period. At that time, molten sediments from massive volcanic eruptions attracted abundant marine life. Over time, as this marine life died out, its chemical composition was enriched with sedimentary rocks, giving rise to the nodules we admire today. As the oceans gradually receded, the water evaporated, leaving huge internal cracks. The chemicals from the vanished marine life then crystallized, forming aragonite “crusts” and calcite crystals.

The majority of Septarian nodules come from Utah, which once bordered the Gulf of Mexico, as well as Madagascar, which enjoyed similar conditions at that time.
