Shungite - Tumbled Stone

Shungite is a carbon-rich stone first discovered in the village of Shun'ga, located in the Republic of Karelia in northern Russia. Its name comes from this village, and it was first described in 1879, displaying an impressive composition of over 98% carbon.

In 1996, three scientists were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their research into the natural antioxidants found in Shungite. These new carbon structures, called “fullerenes,” paved the way for significant scientific advances. Peter the Great, aware of the healing properties of Shungite, founded the first Russian spa near its deposit, exploiting its purifying properties for water. He even made sure that his soldiers took a piece of Shungite with them to ensure the purity of their water during their campaigns.

Shungite, although mainly discovered in Russia, has also been identified in countries such as Austria, Congo, India and the United States.
