Black Spinel was first described in 1546 by George Bauer, a prominent German scientist considered one of the pioneers of modern mineralogy. The scholar, fascinated by the healing properties of minerals, chose to name this gemstone after the Latin word “spina,” meaning thorn, because of the sharp shape of its crystals. This choice of name perfectly illustrates the sharp silhouette of its edges. Spinel comes in a multitude of colors, including black, red, blue, green, orange, and pink hues.

The most remarkable Spinels in the world come from countries such as Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Myanmar and Thailand. Other important sources include Afghanistan, Nepal, Madagascar, Nigeria and Tanzania.
