Tanzanite, a unique form of Zoisite and belonging to the epidote family, occurs as masses and prismatic crystals. Currently, the only region where it is mined is Tanzania, located in southwest Africa, which gives it its name. First discovered in 1967 by H.B. Platt, Tanzanite displays a range of colors ranging from colorless to yellow, brown, gray, and especially its famous blue-violet. A fascinating legend has it that the blue hue of Tanzanite is the result of a light storm that occurred about 30 years before its discovery, causing a fire that changed the color of the Zoisite. The largest natural sample of Tanzanite on record weighs 123 carats, but it is extremely rare to find gemstones larger than 5 carats.
