This stone is often associated with quartz and other Tourmaline hues. It is important not to confuse it with Rubellite (Red Tourmaline), although they can come from the same mines. In the mid to late 1800s, the Chinese Empress Tz'u Hsi became fascinated with the gem and quickly established a direct trade with California mines. The finest specimens of the time came from mines in the San Diego area, including Pala Chief, Tourmaline King & Queen, Himalaya, and Stewart. This thriving trade continued until 1912, when the Chinese government was overthrown. Today, a century later, the Stewart Mine continues to produce Pink Tourmaline of exceptional quality.
