Variscite - Tumbled Stone

Variscite, often referred to as Utahlite, is an exceptionally rare hydrated aluminum phosphate mineral. It usually occurs as masses or crusts, and its crystallization in octahedral form is an uncommon phenomenon. Its hues range from light green to teal blue, similar to that of Turquoise. The green color comes from chromium impurities. Sometimes Variscite can be observed accompanied by a white mineral, Crandallite, which forms inside or on its surface. These unique pieces are particularly prized by jewelers for the creation of cabochons. Discovered in 1837 by A. Breithaupt, Variscite is named after the historical region of Voigtland, Germany, where it was first found.

Today, Variscite is found in deposits such as the United States (notably Arizona and Nevada), as well as Australia, Brazil, Spain, Germany and Poland.
