Vesuvianite - Tumbled Stone

Vesuvianite, often referred to as Idocrase, is a fascinating calcium magnesium aluminum silicate mineral. It occurs in a variety of forms, from compact masses to small pyramidal and prismatic crystals. Its predominant color is olive green, but it can also display shades of brown, yellow, white, purple, pink, and red. The mineral was discovered in 1795 by German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner, who named it after the site where he found the specimen, located on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius in Naples, Italy. At the same time, other researchers were interested in the crystal, leading to increasing confusion among geologists due to the multiple names given to the same stone across Europe. A prominent example is the recording of Vesuvianite as Idocrase by the French mineralogist René Just Huey in 1796, only a year after its initial discovery. Interestingly, Vesuvianite can form in association with other minerals with similar chemical compositions, such as quartz, diopside, epidote, calcites, garnets, and wollastonite.

The main deposits of this stone are found in Peru, Australia, Canada, Austria, China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Spain, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden and the United States, with recent discoveries even in Antarctica!
