First discovered on the beaches of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula in 2017, Yooperlite is a rare form of fluorescent syenite, rich in Sodalite. This unique stone is distinguished by its luminescent properties, emitting a soft yellow-orange glow under ultraviolet light, making for a mesmerizing sight. The intensity of this glow varies depending on the Sodalite concentration, but each stone shines in a captivating way. Affectionately named for their region of origin, “the UP” or “Yoopers” (Michigan’s Upper Peninsula), these gems are accompanied by a fascinating geological history, born from ancient lava flows.

Yooperlites are the result of a combination of volcanic eruptions and glacial movements, formed about a billion years ago during a tumultuous geological period when North America nearly split apart. The Mid-Continental Rift saw spectacular volcanic eruptions, but this fracture ultimately failed to separate the continent. A large mass of magma solidified underground near the present-day shore of Lake Superior, giving rise to the sodalite-bearing syenite, nicknamed "glowdalites."

About 10,000 years ago, the last ice age moved these glowdalites south, scattering them along the shores of the Great Lakes. Today, we are fortunate to discover pieces of Yooperlite, witnesses to a fascinating geological past. The combination of glacial movements and erosion created ideal conditions for the discovery of these natural treasures.
